Don’t Knock the King!

Don’t Knock the King!

The Thai people dearly loved their king, the oldest monarch in the world. Insulting the king or even his picture — including on currency — is punishable by imprisonment.

Even tourists can be arrested. An American was sentenced to 30 months in prison on December 9, 2011, for insulting the King of Thailand on a website when he was in Colorado — not even in Thailand! He was arrested when he visited Thailand later.

The Thai government actually has teams of people who comb through Facebook, Twitter, and social media looking for instances of slander against King Bhumibol Adulyadej and his successor.

The law, known as “Lese Majeste” is being criticized as archaic and a violation of freedom of speech.

Regardless, be smart — don’t insult the monarchy in any way while in Thailand!
