Foods in Thailand

The Thai chili pepper reigns in Southeast Asia and is guaranteed to make you sweat, cry, smile, and beg for more.

The food in Thailand is cheap, mostly healthy, and ridiculously delicious. Most travelers will tell you that it is the thing they miss most after leaving. Unlike travel in the US or Europe, there is almost no point in trying to buy groceries and prepare anything yourself to stay on a budget. Even if you are lucky enough to find a communal kitchen, you will find that it is still probably easier and cheaper just to eat out every day.

Un-Supersize me

The portion sizes are much smaller when judged by our super-sized Western standards. However, with the cost being so low, it makes more sense to eat several small meals throughout the day rather than 2 big meals which leave you too full to strut down the beach. If you do get hungry between meals, snacks and street foods abound in all flavors and shapes (including insects) on the street. It seems like the Thai people are always eating!

Street Foods in Thailand

Street food in Thailand actually is quite safe, cheap, and delicious! Just eat where the locals eat and let your stomach adjust at its own pace.

Western Food

It is sad but inevitable, if you spend a month or more in Thailand (or anywhere for that matter) you will start to crave some kind of Western food. The menus in Thai restaurants can sometimes be 30 pages long! They will attempt to cook nearly anything you can imagine from spaghetti (where the sauce is literally ketchup) to Mexican food. It is not unusual for a hamburger to actually be water buffalo meat and to have chips of bone left in it. Most attempts at Western food are disappointing and expensive, costing 5x or more what Thai food costs.

If you really have to get your fix, look for a place that is expat owned. Pizza is usually the safest bet, but you have to understand that things like bread, cheese, and other ingredients can be hard to come by and usually don’t taste the same.

The Thai people work extremely hard for their food and it is considered very bad character to waste food in Thailand, especially rice.
