Bungalows in Thailand

These are pictures from my stay on Ko Lanta island in 2007 which is on the West side of Thailand in the Andaman Sea. Most tourists end up in Phuket and backpackers end up in Ko Phi Phi. Ko Lanta is a large island which is near both but is way more chilled out without the crazy crowds or extreme prices.

This place was priced at 400 Baht a night during December which is peak season, but I was able to negotiate 300 Baht (US $10) a night because I stayed there for 2 weeks. A place just like this (minus the Andaman Sea) in the north would have probably been around US $5 a night. You have to pay more to play in the islands!

The toilet isn’t as horrible as it seems. You simply keep water in the bucket from the tap and then when you want to flush, you pour water from the bucket with a scoop into the toilet and it forces everything down. As always, toilet paper goes into the plastic bin!

The toilet paper is in a plastic protector because not only is their no roof over the toilet (yes, it can rain in your bathroom!) the entire toilet serves as the shower. There is a shower head which sprays water over the entire room, but the entire room is designed to get wet and could probably use a wash down anyway!

Although this represents very basic accommodation and there was a very expensive resort only 20 minutes walk from this spot, it was the best beach on Ko Lanta (Long Beach) and I never needed anything more. How much time do you want to spend inside when it is well over 100 F degrees?
